The Cure to the Favre Virus is… Favre
By Viking Visionary | July 27, 2008
Well, it’s happened. The Favre Virus that has been utterly decimating the Packers for the past few weeks has officially spread across the border to wreak havoc upon our fair State and its favorite team, the Minnesota Vikings. We warned everyone about the plague a while ago, but it was in vain. However, the Favre Virus was contracted by the Vikings in a far more insidious manner than we could foresee.
The Green Bay Packers organization found a truly devious method for dragging the Vikings down with them and inflicting as much damage as possible. How? It’s been all over the news that the Packers accused the Vikings of tampering with Brett Favre, insinuating that Vikings coaches Brad Childress and Darren Bevell initiated all the Favre-unretiring drama that we so fondly refer to as “the Favre Virus.” They ran to NFL Judge and Jury, er, Commissioner Goodell and pointed a finger at the Vikings, blaming them for the hell-storm they are presently in. The move was brilliant for two reasons: First, they put their rivals directly in the cross-hairs of the witch hunt Goodell is presently leading against tampering, possibly dealing a serious blow to the Vikings in the form of forfeited draft picks. Secondly, they paint Favre as a traitor, an effective strike in the public-relations war they are waging against their former quarterback.
Recently, very cause of the Favre Virus has taken steps toward becoming the cure… for the Vikings at least. Brett has come forth and told the world that the charges filed against the Vikings are ridiculous, and that they in no way enticed him to come back.
“I told Milt, ‘No, I wasn’t [enticed],’” said Favre. “I told Milt and Roger Goodell that if talking to teams is tampering, then there’s about seven-to-10 teams that are guilty of tampering. But Brad isn’t going to try to entice me because he knows that even if he wanted me to play there, it’s not going to happen. The Packers aren’t going to let that happen.
“So Brad and I, yeah, we talk and we exchange text messages. The Packers know that. After we beat them last year, Brad sent me a text message, teasing me how a gray-haired quarterback could still play. And the Packers were aware of that because I shared a laugh with ‘em about that.”
The Packers’ accusations will certainly illicit quite a response, perhaps just not the one they were looking for. Thanks to Brett Favre clearing the air about the Vikings role in his decision, the Packers will not have infected their foe with their deadly virus, but merely given the Purple extra motivation to embarrass them on national television in the season opener. In the meantime, we can amuse ourselves watching as the virus devastates the Packers training camp.
